Where It All Began: The Mother Duck Story and Why Ownership Matters
Mother Duck Childcare began with a simple but powerful belief: that children thrive when they are known, valued, and cared for by people who are deeply invested in their wellbeing.
In 1990, Denis and Ros Hinton purchased their very first early learning centre in Enoggera. At the time, the early childhood sector looked very different to what it does today. Yet from the beginning, Denis and Ros were clear about what mattered most — relationships, professionalism, and putting children first, always.
More than three decades later, Mother Duck Childcare has grown into a group of educator-led services, but that original vision remains unchanged. Denis continues to serve as Chairman of the Board today, providing continuity, stewardship, and a deep connection to the values on which Mother Duck was built.
Why Ownership Matters
One of the defining features of Mother Duck is our owner-operator model. Unlike corporate childcare chains, Mother Duck centres are owned and operated by experienced early childhood professionals — people who understand children, families, and educators because they have lived the work themselves.
This model ensures that:
· Decisions are made close to children and families
· Quality and relationships are prioritised over short-term profit
· Leaders are visible, accountable, and deeply connected to their communities
Ownership matters because it creates stability, consistency, and trust — the very things children need to feel safe and confident as learners.
The Ros Factor: Relationships First
At the heart of Mother Duck’s story is what we call “The Ros Factor.” Named in honour of Ros Hinton, this value reflects our belief in slowing down, making time, and building genuine relationships with children, families, and educators.
Ros believed that early learning is not rushed, transactional, or one-size-fits-all. It is personal. It is relational. And it requires educators who truly know the children in their care.
This belief continues to shape Mother Duck today — in how educators greet families each morning, how leaders support their teams, and how children are seen as capable, confident individuals from the very beginning.
A Legacy That Continues
While Mother Duck has grown, evolved, and adapted to a changing sector, our foundations remain strong. Being owner-operated means we remain grounded in practice. Being values-led means we never lose sight of what matters most.
This blog marks the beginning of a six-part series exploring the values that define Mother Duck Childcare. In the coming weeks, we’ll share how these values come to life every day — in our relationships with families, our investment in educators, and our unwavering commitment to children’s safety, learning, and wellbeing.
Because at Mother Duck, our story has always been about more than childcare. It’s about people. It’s about purpose. And it’s about putting children first — every day, in every centre.
