The role of the early childhood educator has never been more vital — or more complex. Across Australia, services are seeing an increase in children presenting with developmental delays, trauma-related behaviours, and social and emotional challenges. Educators are often the first point of contact for families navigating these difficulties, making it essential that they are equipped with both the skills and confidence to respond.

Ongoing professional development is not a luxury — it is a necessity. To uphold the Queensland Child Safe Standards, we must ensure that educators have the knowledge and tools to recognise, respond to, and support children who may be experiencing vulnerability or adversity.

When educators understand the neuroscience of behaviour, attachment, and trauma, they can create emotionally safe environments where children feel seen, secure, and supported. These environments are at the heart of child safety and wellbeing — they support children to build trust, develop resilience, and thrive.

Operationalising ‘Walking Alongside’ Through Kindy Uplift

Across Mother Duck, our Leadership Teams have intentionally chosen to use Kindy Uplift funding in a way that operationalises our value of Walking Alongside. Rather than directing funds toward isolated professional development sessions, we have embraced a coaching and mentoring model — recognising that the most powerful learning occurs when it is ongoing, embedded, and supported within the educator’s everyday environment.

By engaging consultants, (occupational therapists, inclusion and cultural consultants etc), who coach and reflect alongside educators, we create a continuous learning loop — where theory and practice connect in real time. This approach ensures that new insights are not just heard but applied, reinforced, and embedded into daily practice.

Strategic Leadership and the Neuroscience of Adult Learning

The success of the Kindy Uplift program within Mother Duck centres reflects the strength of strategic leadership — leadership that values learning as an ongoing process, not a one-time event.

We understand that just as every child learns differently, so do educators. Some process information best through discussion and reflection, others through hands-on experience or observation. By adopting a coaching model that spans months rather than hours, we honour these diverse cognitive and learning styles — supporting each educator to build understanding in a way that works for them.

This approach aligns with the neuroscience of adult learning, which shows that deep, sustainable learning develops when information is revisited, applied, and reinforced in multiple ways.
