Mother’s Day and the Reality of Mum Guilt

Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate the love, sacrifice, and strength of mothers. It’s a day when we receive heartfelt drawings, handmade gifts, and perhaps even a cup of coffee in bed. But for many of us, alongside the joy of motherhood, there’s another emotion that lingers—mum guilt.

As a single mother, a business owner, and an early childhood educator, I have spent years balancing the demands of work and motherhood. I know firsthand that no matter how much we give, there’s always a little voice in the back of our minds whispering, “Am I doing enough?”

Mum guilt comes in many forms. It’s the missed school event because of a work meeting. It’s the bedtime story that gets cut short because exhaustion has set in. It’s the worry that our children will one day look back and feel we weren’t there enough. And yet, despite this guilt, we show up every single day, doing the best we can with the time and energy we have.

If I could go back and tell my younger self one thing, it would be this: You are enough. Your child doesn’t need a perfect mother; they need a present one. They need to see that you are human, that you love them fiercely, and that you are doing your best.

Now, as I watch my daughter grow into an incredible young woman, I realise that the guilt I carried for years was never hers to bear. She didn’t measure my love by the hours I spent at work or the moments I missed—she measured it in the hugs, the laughter, and the way I was always there when it truly mattered.

So, to all the mothers reading this: be kind to yourself. This Mother’s Day, take a deep breath and let go of some of that guilt. Celebrate the love, the resilience, and the sacrifices you make every day. Because in the eyes of your child, you are already their greatest gift.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mums in our Mother Duck community. You are doing an amazing job.
