Why Is My Child Always Sick Since Starting Childcare?

Starting childcare is a significant milestone—for children and for families.

It is also very common for families to feel concerned when their child suddenly seems to be unwell more often than before.
If this is your experience, you are not alone—and importantly, this is completely normal.

A normal (and expected) part of growing up
When children begin attending an early childhood service, they are introduced to a wider community of people, environments and, naturally, germs.

According to the NHMRC Staying Healthy Guidelines (2024), infections are common in young children because:
– Their immune systems are still developing
– They have had limited exposure to common viruses and bacteria
– They are learning hygiene practices (like covering coughs or washing hands effectively)
– They engage in close contact play and shared environments

In simple terms—this is often the first time their immune system is being “trained.”

What the research tells us
Research from paediatric and medical sources consistently shows:
– Young children can experience multiple viral illnesses per year, especially in their first year of care
– This exposure helps the immune system learn to recognise and respond to infections
– Over time, children typically become less frequently unwell

This means that while it can feel like “one illness after another,” your child is actually building important long-term immunity.

The long-term picture
It may not feel like it right now, but this stage is temporary.
As children’s immune systems strengthen:
– Illnesses tend to become less frequent
– Symptoms are often milder
– Children build resilience that supports them into school and beyond

This is one of the hidden (and often misunderstood) parts of early childhood development.

What this means for your family
At Mother Duck Childcare & Kindergarten, we understand that this period can feel overwhelming—especially for families with infants or children new to care.

Our role is not only to provide high-quality education and care, but also to:
– Support your child’s health and wellbeing
– Work in partnership with you
– Provide reassurance grounded in evidence and experience

Because while illness can be part of the journey, you are not navigating it alone.

In our next blog, we’ll explore:“Does childcare make children healthier in the long run?”

We’ll unpack how immunity develops over time—and why this stage plays an important role in your child’s future wellbeing.
