Behaviour Guidance that Protects, Connects and Respects

At Mother Duck Childcare, the safety and well-being of every child is our highest priority. In response to the growing conversation about what makes a childcare centre truly safe, we have been deeply reflecting on one of the most powerful protective tools we have—how we respond to children’s behaviour.

Recently, we undertook a comprehensive review of our Behaviour Guidance Policy and Practices, grounded in the latest neuroscience and aligned with the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations. This wasn’t just a policy refresh—it was a re-commitment to fostering environments where children feel safe, seen, and supported.

A Relational and Protective Approach

Our updated approach is centred on the belief that all behaviour is a form of communication, and every response from an adult shapes a child’s sense of trust, belonging and safety. That’s why we are committed to guiding behaviour through connection, steady boundaries, and empathy—never through fear, shame, or punishment.

This approach ensures that:

  • Children’s voices matter. We create spaces where children are listened to, not silenced.
  • Body cues are respected. Children are supported to recognise when something feels uncomfortable or unsafe.
  • Help-seeking is encouraged. Children are never made to feel wrong or ‘naughty’ for expressing distress or uncertainty.
  • Trusted adults respond. Our educators are trained to recognise and respond to both behaviours and underlying needs with consistency and care.

By avoiding punitive or shaming practices, we strengthen protective factors that reduce vulnerability to abuse and support children’s long-term emotional well-being.

Behaviour Guidance as a Safeguarding Practice

This is not only a relational approach—it is a protective one. It empowers children with the language, confidence, and trust to speak up when something doesn’t feel right. It builds their capacity to form healthy boundaries, understand consent, and recognise unsafe situations.

Our Behaviour Guidance Policy affirms:

“This policy reflects our shared commitment to nurturing safe, inclusive, and responsive environments where every child feels seen, heard, and deeply valued.”

This philosophy isn’t an add-on to our child protection efforts—it is central to them. Respectful, attuned behaviour guidance is a safeguarding practice in its own right.

A Culture of Safety—Every Day, Every Child, Every Educator, Every Time

We know that creating a child-safe organisation is not a one-time event—it’s a culture we live out every day, in every interaction. As educators, we are not just responding to behaviour—we are shaping children’s understanding of their rights, their worth, and their safety.

If you’re a parent, we encourage you to ask your childcare provider: How do you guide children’s behaviour in a way that keeps them safe, emotionally supported, and respected?

At Mother Duck, we are proud to say: with connection, with empathy, and always with the child’s dignity in mind.
